Different Dimension Tulip Mania

Tulip Mania was created by Missi of Indiana-based indie polish maker Different Dimension for the April 2018 "Tulips" edition of The Holo Hookup, a monthly four-lacquer polish box. Officially described as "a bright berry red linear holographic polish with added shimmers," the color is a vibrant, medium-toned, rosy variation of magenta with aspects of Mexican pink, kind of like a cross between Hollywood cerise and rose bonbon

Finely-milled holographic pigment gives it a lush, floral character on the nail, nuancing the base with dimensionalizing hues of violet, shocking pink and French rose in ambient light and combining with golden particulate shimmers to create a lively, gleaming, semi-metallic underlay of bright pink. In the sun, there's a brilliant linear prismatic display featuring the full retinue of rainbow colors.

Application was luscious. The consistency of Tulip Mania is fluid, dense and smooth with a medium-to-slightly-thicker viscosity and a velvety, even, self-leveling glide over the nail. Pigmentation is very good to excellent, producing evenly opaque coverage and full bottle color in two coats. Cleanup is easy. Tulip Mania dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat does not interfere with the holographic properties of the polish in any way.

Photos show two coats of Tulip Mania over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

You can't really tell it from the pics, but the gleaming, semi-metallic underlay is quite prominent and adds considerable sass to the spirited but ladylike sensibility of the strong, clear, cool, floral pink. The look is sleek and deft, bold and exuberant, with a vivacious, purposeful kind of energy. Gorgeous!

Different Dimension Ophelia

Ophelia was released at the beginning of this month by Indiana-based indie polish maker Different Dimension as part of the Over The Moon collection, a series of four glitterbomb polishes inspired by and named for moons of the planet Uranus. Ophelia is a tiny moon of Uranus, and it was named for the character from William Shakespeare's Hamlet.

It's described as "a full coverage glitter bomb, filled with purple to blue multichrome glitters and silver holographic microglitters in a slightly holographic tinted base." The multichrome glitters are dark and actually tinier than the silver holographic microglitters, but their effect on the look is noticeable. They somehow seem to impart their purple/blue shift onto the silvery microglitters so that in ambient light, you see a generalized lavender sparkle shifting to sky blue interspersed with darker purple flecks, with a mobile flush of rainbow sparks as the holographic properties of the microglitters are ignited by light traveling over them. In direct light, bold prismatic sparkle blankets a glistening, silvery lavender-esque underlay.

Application was awesome! The consistency of Ophelia is fluid and full-bodied with a medium-to-slightly-thicker viscosity and a self-leveling glide over the nail that appreciates a light, careful hand. Glitter payoff is outstanding and dispersal is remarkably even with a light touch, providing an evenly opaque look in two coats -- fantastic! I did my cleanup as I went along but had some sticky glitters even so. Ophelia dries naturally in very good time to a sparkly, textured, matte finish. A layer of glitter-smoothing topcoat left it textured and shiny, with a second layer of quick-dry making it moderately smooth, but not glassy.

Photos show two coats of Ophelia over ÜNT Ready for Takeoff peelable basecoat with a layer of Girly Bits Glitter Glaze followed by a layer of Seche Vite.

I love glitterbombs and this is a gorgeous one, with a speckly look and a surprisingly light and airy feel, kind of like having layers of glittery lavender tulle on your nails. There's also a copper sheen generated at oblique angles to the light, another feature of the multichrome glitters. The excellent coverage was unexpected and amazed me. Even after scrutinizing the opacity at two coats with an LED spotlight, I wasn't tempted to add a third.

I chose Ophelia as my representative polish from the collection, but can definitely see the attraction of ordering all four, especially after experiencing this one. Expertly crafted, wonderful to work with and dazzling on the nail -- with the obvious benefits of peel-off basecoat, what's not to love?

Different Dimension Kiss Me Under The Light Of A Thousand Stars

Like As Long As The Stars Are Above You and Others That Broke My Heart They Were Like Northern Stars, Kiss Me Under The Light Of A Thousand Stars was released last month by Indiana-based indie polish maker Different Dimension as part of the I Do Trio, which Missi created in celebration of her 13 January wedding. This polish was made to match the cake topper.

Missi describes it as a "silver full coverage glitter bomb loaded with smaller sized silver holographic micro-glitters in a slightly holographic tinted base." It is fantastic! It gives the impression of pulverized platinum laced with bazillions of sparkling nanoscale diamonds. The underlying color is a pale achromatic grey similar to the way web color silver appears on a computer screen, but you scarcely notice it amidst all of the lightplay. The prismatic sparkle in the sun is amazing!

Application was wonderful. The consistency of Kiss Me Under The Light Of A Thousand Stars is fluid and slightly fluffy with a perfectly-paintable, medium viscosity and a smooth, even, self-leveling glide over the nail, most impressive! Coverage is provided by the glitters, which go on so evenly that you could easily wear this at one coat as a sheer sparklefest -- it looks gorgeous that way -- and is opaque enough in two coats that I can't see needing a third. I did my cleanup as I went along while the polish was wet and had no issues. Kiss Me Under The Light Of A Thousand Stars dries naturally in extremely good time to a sandy, matte finish that is admirably smoothed by a single layer of glitter-smoothing or gel-effect topcoat. I added a final topcoat of Seche Vite for a glossy, glitter-under-glass look, but you could also wear it without topcoat as a sparkling matte, very chic!

The name of this polish comes from the song "Thinking Out Loud" by British singer/songwriter/guitarist/record producer Ed Sheeran.

I highly recommend the I Do Trio -- all three of them are beautifully-formulated, gorgeous polishes. It's a limited edition collection that will only be available for two more weeks, until Valentine's Day. Don't miss your chance to share in Missi's wedding celebration!

Different Dimension Others That Broke My Heart They Were Like Northern Stars

Like As Long As The Stars Are Above You, Others That Broke My Heart They Were Like Northern Stars was released this month by Indiana-based indie polish maker Different Dimension as part of the I Do Trio, three special polishes created by Missi in celebration of her wedding day. This particular polish was made to match her gown.

It's officially described as a "champagne/ivory linear holographic polish with color-shifting shimmers and holographic microflakies," and while you could certainly call it champagne or ivory, I feel like those terms belie the beautifully-balanced complexity of this creamy off-white shade. The white base is tinted ever-so-slightly with grey and fawn, kind of like a very pale beige or eggshell or parchment but with greater subtlety, and it has a smooth, silk satin luster with a certain pearly quality that makes it the most eminently bridal polish I think I've ever seen. I'd call the color isabelline, an organic, warm, creamy off-white with aspects of cement and pearly grey. Luminous pink-to-gold color-shifting microflake shimmers give it a pinkish glow in certain lights and create a delicate, glistening trail of minute orangey-pink microflakes along the axis of light under a direct source. Holo pigment and flakies read as silver within the base, and add a mist of complementary sparkle in pasteled prismatc hues, especially in direct light.

Application was blissful. The consistency of Others That Broke My Heart They Are Like Northern Stars is fluid and creamy with a medium viscosity and a fluent, silky-smooth, self-leveling slip over the nail, a gorgeous, user-friendly formula that is simply outstanding for an off-white or white-based polish. Pigmentation is very good. A touch of sheerness and unevenness in the first coat builds surprisingly easily to wearably opaque coverage with the second if using medium coats. Thinner coats will probably need three and I used three for the photos, but I'm inclined to think that the delicate luminosity of the look is actually complimented by the hint of native translucence at two. Cleanup is easy. Others That Broke My Heart They Were Like Northern Stars dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish.

I suspected that my pics wouldn't do justice to this polish and they don't. It has qualities that just totally transcend the two-dimensional aspects of a still image, like the fact that it's actually wearable for me, for one. Generally, cream or ivory looks like death against my skintone, but this is elegant, lustrous, congenial, becoming... in short, beautiful. It is not at all stark, nor is it overly soft or listless. It has a stunning creamy luminosity and an easy, flattering grace on the nail. Without a doubt my most favorite white/off-white polish look ever! Highly recommended!

The name of this polish comes from the lyrics of "Bless The Broken Road" by American country music/light rock/pop band Rascal Flatts. Before I listened to this, I was wondering how in the world I could shorten or abbreviate the polish name for the purposes of my post. But after hearing the song, I didn't even want to shorten it. A wonderful, resonant, romantic image!

Different Dimension As Long As The Stars Are Above You

As Long As The Stars Are Above You was released earlier this month by Indiana-based indie polish maker Different Dimension as part of the I Do Trio, three polishes created by Missi in celebration of her wedding on 13 January 2017.

This particular polish was made to match Missi's wedding shoes, and is described as a "Tiffany blue/robin's egg blue linear holographic polish with sterling silver flakies and silver holographic micro-glitters." The base color is indeed a true Tiffany blue, with subtle sky blue aspects that I suspect are holographically generated. The holo pigment reads as pale gold within the base and there's a delicate golden prismatic flush along the axis of light, especially in the sun. Abundant sterling silver flakies gleam brightly as light travels over them, and copious holographic microglitters light up in tiny, twinkling prismatic sparks. These components give the finish a finely flecked appearance with oodles of lightplay, adding a certain foamy, effervescent sensibility to the look and feel of the polish on the nail.

Application was fantastic! The consistency of As Long As The Stars Are Above You is fluid, smooth and slightly fluffy with a medium viscosity and an easy, plush, self-leveling slip over the nail, a gorgeous formula that is surprisingly biddable for a component-laden lacquer. Pigmentation is very good. Two coats nets completely even, opaque coverage and full bottle color. Cleanup is straightforward, with a bit of stickiness on the part of the components. As Long As The Stars Are Above You dries naturally in very good time to a slightly flat, gently pebbled texture that is completely smoothed by a single layer of gel-effect or glitter-smoothing topcoat, which adds a becoming shine.

What a beautiful polish -- I love every little thing about it! The lovely, serene color, the delicately gleaming and twinkling components, the pale gold prismatic effects  -- all work together to give the polish an intricate yet cohesive, diaphanous quality that is simply exquisite! It is a perfect vision of loveliness, and makes me think of Aphrodite rising from the sea.

The name of this polish is taken from the lyrics of "How Long Will I Love You" by English singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding.

Different Dimension Alexandria

Like Olivia, Alexandria was released in December by Indiana-based indie polish maker Different Dimension as part of the Winter 2017 collection. This polish is named for Missi's step-daughter and is described as "a medium kelly green linear holographic polish with added glowing pink ‘unicorn’ type color-shifting shimmers and a scattering of holographic microglitters."

To my eye, the color is a yellow-green shade, medium-toned with a skosh of grey to it in ambient light, giving it slightly muted, mellow quality that similar to artichoke but with perhaps a little more oomph. Holographic pigment gives it a delicately-grained visual texture and a dimensional appearance on the nail that is dotted with twinkling prismatic sparks from the holographic microglitters, and luminous pink color-shifting microflake shimmers create a glistening orangey-pink swath along the axis of light. In bright direct light, the color brightens to more of an asparagus look, with a sparkling linear prismatic flare predominated by azure, spring green and gold that frames a shimmering lick of orangey-pink.

Application was great! The consistency of Alexandria is fluid, dense and smooth with a medium viscosity and an even, self-leveling glide over the nail. Pigmentation is very good, delivering full opacity and bottle color in two coats. Cleanup is straightforward. Alexandria dries naturally in very good time to a fairly shiny finish with a gentle, pebbly hint of texture, easily smoothed by topcoat, which does not interfere with the holographic properties in any way.

Photos show two coats of Alexandria over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite. Because the skylight in my bathroom (where I usually take my pics) was covered over with snow, I took these outside on the back porch. Snowlit photos! My cuticles are kind of shriveled in the cold.

Because the light is so soft, these photos don't really show the dimensionality of the polish as it appears in an environment with a directional light source. But I like them anyway, and I love this polish. In less stark surroundings, the color is richer and less muddy, with lots of light play and a warm, mellow quality on the nail.

Different Dimension Olivia

Olivia was released last month by Indiana-based indie polish maker Different Dimension as part of the Winter 2017 collection. Creator Missi named this polish for one of her nieces, and describes it as "a baby blue linear holographic polish with added glowing pink ‘unicorn’ type color-shifting shimmers and a scattering of holographic microglitters."

The base color is a delicate, creamy pale blue with relatively little green and a hint of silvery grey to it, perhaps from the abundance of holographic pigment it carries, giving it a look in ambient light that is similar to the shade beau blue from the Plochere Color System. It's loaded with fine, luminous pink-to-gold shimmers that remind me of the fiery orangey-pink you see in opals and create a glowing pinkish mist along the axis of light, eliciting the illusion of an illuminated nailbed -- very cool! Holographic microglitters twinkle as light travels over them, tiny sparks in pale hues of pink, azure, gold and spring green. In the sun, the color appears to brighten to a vibrant, true baby blue and displays a linear prismatic flare predominated by bright azure that frames a radiant, misty swath of orangey-pink, with the scattered microglitters adding extra sparkle to the look.

Application was fantastic. The consistency of Olivia is fluid and creamy with a medium viscosity and a plush, self-leveling glide over the nail, an excellent, user-friendly formula that goes right where you put it and stays there. Pigmentation is surprisingly opaque on the first coat for such a light shade, and delivers completely even coverage and full bottle color with the second. Cleanup required a little more perseverance than I expected due to stickiness on the part of not only the microglitters, but the shimmers as well. Olivia dries naturally in very good time to a smooth shiny finish. Topcoat does not interfere with the holographic properties of the polish and accentuates the presence and effects of the shimmers.

Photos show two coats of Olivia over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

I love the name Olivia so perhaps I am predisposed to love this polish, but the color, in ambient light especially (which I think is its best look), is just so pretty and ethereal -- it has a fairy ice princess kind of vibe with the added magic of luminous shimmers and scattered, twinkling holographic microglitters. An excellent wintry light blue that will also wear beautifully in the spring!
