Don Deeva Vicious Denim

Vicious Denim was released, I'm pretty sure, in February this year by Florida-based indie polish maker Don Deeva as a stand-alone polish. Creator Danette describes it as "a metallic blue flake with holographic and a delicate shimmer." The color is a semi-translucent, medium-dark steel blue with aspects of cornflower and sapphire. Holographic pigment gives it a shimmering, finely-grained visual texture and dimensionalizes the look on the nail -- slightly lighter in the center shading to a deeper Atlantic blue color at the edges. Tiny blue metallic microflakes read as kind of a French sky blue within the base, glistening as light travels over them and imparting a gentle, semi-metallic sheen to the look. The color appears to brighten in the sun, where it's veiled with fine scattered prismatic sparkle and a vestigial linear prismatic flare, slightly dispersed by the microflakes.

Application was fantastic. The consistency of Vicious Denim is fluid, light and smooth with a medium viscosity and an easy, fluent, self-leveling glide over the nail, a lovely formula that just kind of floats on like a silky piece of lingerie. So nice! Pigmentation is very good, building to even, opaque coverage in two coats. I added a third to see if it made a difference and to my eye it added a bit of density and oomph to the color. Cleanup was easy, even with the microflakes. Vicious Denim dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat accentuates the presence and effects of those blue metallic microflakes.

I love this gorgeous, graceful, shimmering blue, it's delicious! It's bold and expressive but not pushy, with an elegant, refined quality on the nail and a kind of oceanic sensibility, a resonant, deep water vibe that is just irresistible to me. Blue-lovers, take note!

Don Deeva Orange You Sexy

I have another Don Deeva custom for you today!

Like Smack & Cheese, Orange You Sexy was released in January this year exclusively for members of the Orange You Glad to Be Here Facebook group. This one is described as "a full coverage orange holo microglitter dotted with turquoise glitters in a holo sauce." Superfine orange microglitters give the polish its basic color, which is a rich, medium-toned amalgam of fiery auburn, pumpkin and burnt orange that is all sparkle, all the time. Slightly larger holographic turquoise hexes interject sparks of blue and green, and even larger (but still pretty small) holographic orange hexes offer scattered flashes of brilliant red-orange, amber and flame. You can imagine the prismatic sparkle in the sun -- it's almost lethal!

Application was awesome. The consistency of Orange You Sexy is fluid and surprisingly light, with a medium viscosity and a pleasingly fluent spread over the nail that appreciates a careful, light touch for most even dispersal of the glitters, which build to uniformly opaque coverage in three coats. I did my cleanup as I went along and had no issues. Orange You Sexy dries naturally in very good time to a sandy-textured, matte finish that eats topcoat for lunch. You're going to need some serious glitter-smoothing mojo to gloss up this puppy! Alternatively, you could wear it as a sparkling matte, very cool.

Don Deeva Smack & Cheese

Smack & Cheese was released last month by Florida-based indie polish maker Don Deeva as one of three limited edition custom polishes that Danette created exclusively for members of the Orange You Glad to Be Here orange polish lovers Facebook group. Love the name of this lacquer, so very Deeva-liscious! It's described as an "orange holographic sauce with purple ultra chrome flakes running throughout."

The color is a muted, translucent, medium-toned shade along the lines of Persian orange, in the same family as burnt orange but a little lighter and more orange, less brown. Fine holographic pigment reads as gold within the base, adding a luminous golden shimmer in ambient light with dimensionalizing nuances of amber and bittersweet to the base color. Irregularly-shaped ultrachrome flakies are relatively small but easily visible, giving the polish a rakish, speckled look and flashing in shades of violet and blue as light travels over them. In the sun, there's a sparkling, fully-linear prismatic flare with dominant arcs of orange and spring green.

Application was great! The consistency of Smack & Cheese is fluid, light and smooth with a medium viscosity and an easy, fluent, self-leveling glide over the nail. The flakies go on effortlessly without stacking or stickups and disperse evenly. Pigmentation is sheer, building to a wearable opacity in three coats. Cleanup is easy. Smack & Cheese dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish with occasional dimples from flakies at the surface. Topcoat does not in any way interfere with the holographic properties of the polish.

This polish manifests the mischievous, unpredictable personality of the brand and I love that! It's kind of a novelty look, dignified by careful craftsmanship. Violet and blue are complementary to orange-yellow and orange, and the flashy ultrachrome flakies are fabulous with the orange base color. An excellent polish for fans of institutions with orange and blue as their official colors, and, of course, for orange-loving polish enthusiasts everywhere. Thank you, Danette!

Don Deeva Mike Jones

Mike Jones was released this past fall, in November I think, by Florida-based indie polish maker Don Deeva. Officially described as "a gray base with a heavy violet shimmer and holo flake running throughout," the color is a translucent middle grey, perceptually about halfway between black and white, with aspects of slate and steel. Abundant luminous silvery holographic flakes speckle the finish and light up in shades of azure, spring green and gold as light travels over them, while fine violet shimmers give the polish a glowing lavender sheen and create a glistening lavender mist along the axis of light. Direct sun intensifies all aspects of the look.

Application was awesome. The consistency of Mike Jones is fluid, light and smooth with a medium viscosity and a fluent, silky, self-leveling slip over the nail, a biddable, user-friendly formula that is a pleasure to manipulate with Don Deeva's flattened-style brush. Pigmentation is somewhat sheer and meant to be that way -- layering a translucent formula to opacity creates a dimensional platform for its light-catching components. I think the color is best at three coats. Cleanup is easy. Mike Jones dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat adds a becoming gloss that highlights the dimensionality of the polish and accentuates the effects of the violet shimmers.

Love the luminous lavender effect of those gorgeous violet shimmers and the way they sparkle in the light. The color adds a bit of coolness to the sleek dimensionality of the grey base, giving it character. I also love the colors I see in the holo flakes -- azure, spring green and gold -- and the combination of those colors with the lavender sparkle in the sun. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this polish as much as I do, but as usual with Danette's creations it's just so graceful and so beautifully constructed that I can't help myself! Still available in Don Deeva's online shop!

Don Deeva Glocks & Poprocks (H)

Today's polish is Glocks & Poprocks (H) from Florida-based indie polish maker Don Deeva and I'm thinking it was released not too long ago, like earlier this fall, as the holographic version of a multichrome with the same name. Creator Danette describes it as a "red/purple/magenta/orange" multichrome, which I've come to think of as the sunset colorway. The primary color, the one I see most of, is a medium-dark Mardi Gras purple, sometimes appearing silvery and almost pearlized, sometimes nuanced with violet and sometimes rich, bold and direct. This purple transitions through magenta to a fiery flame color as you turn your fingers into the light, with various gradations and mauve/berry iterations along the way. The addition of holographic pigment softens the typical metallic multichrome finish, texturizing it with delicate, sparkling, prismatic effervescence in ambient light and creating a dazzling linear holographic flare in the sun.

Application went well. The consistency of Glocks & Poprocks (H) is fluid, dense and smooth with a medium-to-thicker viscosity to which I added polish thinner at the outset. Thinned, it still retained a dense feel, with a plush, full-bodied, self-leveling flow over the nail that went on most easily for me in slightly thicker coats. Pigmentation is very good and delivers a wearable opacity in two coats, although I used three for maximum multichromatic and holographic goodness. Cleanup is easy. Glocks & Poprocks (H) dries naturally in average time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat does not inhibit the holographic properties in any way.

I love the rich, dramatic colors of this shifty polish -- it's my favorite multichrome colorway and some sort of transition is almost always visible when you've got it on your nails. The holographic effervescence is always present as well, adding an exquisite, dimensional mist of tiny, sparkling motes in rainbow colors that builds to a prismatic crescendo in the sun. Glorious!
