Cupcake Polish Shut Your Tulips

Shut Your Tulips was created by Sara of Texas-based indie polish maker Cupcake Polish especially for inclusion in the April 2018 "Tulips" edition of The Holo Hookup. Described as "a vibrant orange linear holo packed with super shiny silver shimmers," the color is a luxuriant ambery-orange shade that is similar to orange peel, about halfway between amber and orange on the color wheel. It reminds me of turmeric and Indian gold.

Finely-milled holographic pigment nuances the color with hues of mango and carrot and gives it the delicately-grained visual texture common to holos. Tiny silver microflake shimmers sparkle in shades of gold, amber and orange as light travels over them, adding extra zing and sleekness to the finish and giving the polish a luxurious sensibility. In the sun, there's a linear prismatic flare predominated by spring green and orange, slightly dispersed by the microflake shimmers but extra sparkly because of them also.

Application was fantastic. The consistency of Shut Your Tulips is fluid, full-bodied and smooth with a medium viscosity and a plush, self-leveling glide over the nail. Pigmentation is excellent, very close to a one-coater. Two coats ensures most uniform opacity. Cleanup is straightforward with some scattering of the microflake shimmers. Shut Your Tulips dries naturally in very good time to a silky smooth, slightly flat finish. Topcoat does not in any way interfere with the holographic properties of this polish.

Cupcake Polish Shut Your Tulips

Wow, this color is amazing, so vibrant and rich! Sometimes orange polish can feel a little forced or exaggerated or synthetic, but this one has a gorgeous organic quality that's both earthy and ornamental, natural and high-end. I adore the addition of the sparkling microflake shimmers, they add a touch of extra reflectivity and glamor to the presentation of this polish on the nail that is entirely in keeping with the glowing, opulent nature of the color. Gorgeous with earthtones and jeweltones as well. Really special!

Zoya Tawny

Tawny was released in mid-October this past fall by Zoya as part of the Party Girls collection for winter/holiday 2018. It's officially described as "a deep, coppery rose sparkling metallic," which I think is quite accurate except that I would add "shimmer" after "metallic." The base is a translucent, medium-dark, rich, rosy Indian red kind of color, a little brighter, pinker and not quite as heavy as rust although it does have a rusty aspect. Superabundant, highly-reflective metallic microflake shimmers read in shades of gold, flame and pink from within the base, giving the polish a finely-grained visual texture with a radiant semi-metallic quality that has a fine, piecey sparkle.

Application was most satisfactory once I'd clipped a few wonky bristles from my brush. The consistency of Tawny is fluid, light and smooth with a medium consistency and a plush, self-leveling glide over the nail. Pigmentation is a little sheer and streaky on the first coat but will build to wearable opacity with the second if you're using medium to thicker coats. I added a third to ensure the absence of any sheer spots in my photos, and the color seems richer and more fiery that way. Cleanup is easy. Tawny dries naturally in fairly good time to a smooth, shiny finish.

Zoya Tawny

I think this is gorgeous! The color is uncommon, a fiery mix of red, rose, and flame with a dash of magenta for good measure. It's especially brilliant in the sun where it's alive with fine, twinkling sparkle and a bright swath of coppery pink along the axis of light.

Don Deeva Orange You Sexy

I have another Don Deeva custom for you today!

Like Smack & Cheese, Orange You Sexy was released in January this year exclusively for members of the Orange You Glad to Be Here Facebook group. This one is described as "a full coverage orange holo microglitter dotted with turquoise glitters in a holo sauce." Superfine orange microglitters give the polish its basic color, which is a rich, medium-toned amalgam of fiery auburn, pumpkin and burnt orange that is all sparkle, all the time. Slightly larger holographic turquoise hexes interject sparks of blue and green, and even larger (but still pretty small) holographic orange hexes offer scattered flashes of brilliant red-orange, amber and flame. You can imagine the prismatic sparkle in the sun -- it's almost lethal!

Application was awesome. The consistency of Orange You Sexy is fluid and surprisingly light, with a medium viscosity and a pleasingly fluent spread over the nail that appreciates a careful, light touch for most even dispersal of the glitters, which build to uniformly opaque coverage in three coats. I did my cleanup as I went along and had no issues. Orange You Sexy dries naturally in very good time to a sandy-textured, matte finish that eats topcoat for lunch. You're going to need some serious glitter-smoothing mojo to gloss up this puppy! Alternatively, you could wear it as a sparkling matte, very cool.

Don Deeva Smack & Cheese

Smack & Cheese was released last month by Florida-based indie polish maker Don Deeva as one of three limited edition custom polishes that Danette created exclusively for members of the Orange You Glad to Be Here orange polish lovers Facebook group. Love the name of this lacquer, so very Deeva-liscious! It's described as an "orange holographic sauce with purple ultra chrome flakes running throughout."

The color is a muted, translucent, medium-toned shade along the lines of Persian orange, in the same family as burnt orange but a little lighter and more orange, less brown. Fine holographic pigment reads as gold within the base, adding a luminous golden shimmer in ambient light with dimensionalizing nuances of amber and bittersweet to the base color. Irregularly-shaped ultrachrome flakies are relatively small but easily visible, giving the polish a rakish, speckled look and flashing in shades of violet and blue as light travels over them. In the sun, there's a sparkling, fully-linear prismatic flare with dominant arcs of orange and spring green.

Application was great! The consistency of Smack & Cheese is fluid, light and smooth with a medium viscosity and an easy, fluent, self-leveling glide over the nail. The flakies go on effortlessly without stacking or stickups and disperse evenly. Pigmentation is sheer, building to a wearable opacity in three coats. Cleanup is easy. Smack & Cheese dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish with occasional dimples from flakies at the surface. Topcoat does not in any way interfere with the holographic properties of the polish.

Don Deeva Smack & Cheese

This polish manifests the mischievous, unpredictable personality of the brand and I love that! It's kind of a novelty look, dignified by careful craftsmanship. Violet and blue are complementary to orange-yellow and orange, and the flashy ultrachrome flakies are fabulous with the orange base color. An excellent polish for fans of institutions with orange and blue as their official colors, and, of course, for orange-loving polish enthusiasts everywhere. Thank you, Danette!

Painted Polish Orangeade Obsession

Orangeade Obsession was released in June 2017 by California-based indie polish maker Painted Polish as part of the Summer Citrus Trio, and is described as "orange ultra holo with added silver holographic glitter." The color is a bright, expansive medium-light orange peel hue that lies about halfway between amber and orange. Holographic pigment nuances it with shimmering shades of gold, amber and carrot in ambient light and gives the polish an effervescent, finely-grained visual texture as well as a flashy, semi-metallic underlay. The glitters emit tiny, twinkling sparks in gold, orange and spring green as light travels over them and blanket the look with prismatic sparkle in the sun, where there's a fully linear, gradated holographic flare in red, orange, gold and spring green that frames a lick of semi-metallic ambery-orange and shades to a deep carrot hue at the sidewalls of the nail.

Application was lovely. The silvery glitters had sunk in my bottle, but reintegrated beautifully after letting the bottle stand upside down for a little while and giving it a brisk shake. The consistency of Orangeade Obsession is fluid and creamy with a medium viscosity and an even, smooth, self-leveling glide over the nail, an excellent, eminently-paintable formula. Glitter payoff is excellent and evenly dispersed. Pigmentation is very good -- two coats delivers evenly opaque coverage and full bottle color. Cleanup is easy, even with the glitters. Orangeade Obsession dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat does not interfere with the holographic properties of the polish in any way.

Painted Polish Orangeade Obsession

A wonderful amber-leaning orange! It's got such a sunny, confident, social disposition on the nail, extroverted in the manner of all oranges but not loud or overly flamboyant. Very wearable! I love it when Lexi adds those dainty, twinkling holographic glitters to her holos, it really ups the glamour and charisma of the look and adds that extra bit of panache.
