Lucky 13 Lacquer Emerald City

Emerald City was released by indie polish maker Lucky 13 Lacquer as part of the eponymous Emerald City trio. It is the lone holo in this set; the other two polishes are creme/jelly hybrids with shimmer. As you would think, Emerald City is an emerald green linear holo, very plush and well-balanced with just the right touch of blue to it. Leafy and gentle, it's a perfect base for the kind of color nuancing that takes place in linear holos in indirect light -- which is a good thing, because today is overcast and spitting rain so I can't show you the full effects of the prismatic display. But when you see the dimensionality and richness that the holographic pigment produces in this color in indirect lighting, I'm sure you'll be able to imagine the splendor that direct sun would reveal.

Application was a delight. Jess, the owner and creative force behind Lucky 13, seems to have a knack for creating perfectly fluid, smooth, creamy formulas for her holos. Emerald City is just lovely, easily manipulated and amenable to thin or thicker coats, with a silky glide over the nail and excellent self-leveling properties. Pigmentation with this one is buildable. Overall it is more sheer than I expected, but the formula is such a pleasure to work with that an extra coat is no bother. I used three medium coats for this manicure and am happy with opacity and coverage they provided. Cleanup is easy and straightforward with no trace of staining. Emerald City dries naturally in good time to a smooth shiny finish. Topcoat does not appear to diminish the holographic properties of this polish in any way.

Photos show three coats of Emerald City over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

See what I mean about the holo's effect on the color? So lush! A bazillion little particles, each contributing its own shade of green, with subtle shading over the planes and curves of the nail bed and a gentle radiant bloom along the axis of light. I'm crazy about this particular aspect of linear holos, the way they look in bright indirect light. Of course I like a delineated prismatic display as much as anyone, but this is, if not as dazzling, at least as dimensional and interesting to the eye, don't you think? And so beautiful!

love,
Liz

  1. What a lovely, gentle, clover-y green. This would be perfect for St. Patrick's Day. Your term "plush" is a good word for it. <3

    1. You're right, Melissa, it'd be awesome for St. Patty's! Will you remind me when March rolls around that I need to revisit this one? ;) I do need to wear it again, if only to get photos of it in the sun.
