Great Lakes Lacquer Thick Ice

I loved yesterday's polish so much that the only thing I could find to induce me to remove it was the anticipation of another from the same collection. Like Cuddly Soft Covers, Thick Ice was released last month by Michigan-based indie polish maker Great Lakes Lacquer as part of the My Winter Survival Kit collection.

Creator Mariah describes this one as "a deep watery blue with pink and purple sheen and shimmer with holo micro flakes and a linear holo finish." The color is a jewel-like medium-dark cerulean, a lush, oceanic variation of blue-green in a jelly formula that shimmers with finely-milled holographic pigment. Glimmering holographic microflakes gently stipple the finish, which has a misty translucent sheen created by the tiny particulate shimmers.

Application was fantastic. The consistency of Thick Ice is fluid, full-bodied and smooth with a medium viscosity and a silky, self-leveling slip over the nail that is a pleasure to finesse with GLL's flattened flexible brush. Pigmentation is excellent, with wearably opaque coverage in one medium coat and full bottle color in two. Cleanup is easy. Thick Ice dries naturally in good time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat really enhances the presence and effects of those particulate shimmers.

Photos show two coats of Thick Ice over KBShimmer Love You Strong Time treatment and Pretty Serious All Your Base basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

No sun shots as it is heavily overcast here today, but I adore this color. Cerulean is the great amalgam of blues, overlapping cyan, blue, azure and even sky blue in its iterations. I find it irresistibly rich and resonant, almost poignantly beautiful, and this polish delivers some serious cerulean gorgeousness, enhanced by that surreptitious floating sheen created by the purple and pink shimmers. And then there's the holographic components, which add a gleaming dimensional quality in addition to prismatic sparkle and effects. What more could you want from a polish?

love,
Liz
