KBShimmer Rust No One

Rust No One was recently released by indie polish maker KBShimmer as part of the Fall 2014 collection. One of two linear holo polishes from that collection, Rust No One is an unusual, particularly beautiful and feminine shade of blood orange with deep rosy pink tones that give it a coral lean. Despite the name, there is nothing rusty about this lovely, radiant color. It has an assertive holographic response in almost any light but especially, of course, in direct sun, where the prismatic display is strongly delineated and the base takes on a semi-metallic coppery flash with translucent clouds of red orange floating above it. In indirect light, there is a softened rainbow flair of colors that nuance the red-orange base to rich shades of deep pink, melon, coral and flame. Especially striking is an ethereal blush of violet that gives this polish an exotic hot-house flower sensibility. Truly an extraordinarily beautiful and rare base color for a linear holo.

Application was buttery smooth and fabulous. Rust No One has a dense, fluid, silky consistency with a satiny glide over the nail and very good self-leveling properties. It's a "thick in a good way" kind of formula, and the application felt effortless, which was such a pleasure. Pigmentation is very good. The first coat has good even color with a slight degree of translucence and builds easily to opacity in two or three coats, depending upon how you paint. I used two coats for this manicure and while the coverage was opaque to my eye, it did show a little bit of translucence when backlit, but not enough to bother me. Cleanup was easy and straightforward. Rust No One dries naturally in good time to a silky smooth shiny finish. Top did not diminish the holographic properties in any way.

Photos show two coats of Rust No One over Seche Rebuild treatment and Pretty Serious All Your Base basecoat with a topcoat of Glisten and Glow HK Girl.

Rust No One is remarkably photogenic. I took forty-some-odd pics of this polish and almost all of them turned out beautifully. Deciding which ones to include was difficult, and I surprised myself by omitting all but one of the direct sun shots -- this polish in indirect light is just so rich and full of color that those pics were my favorites.

There's a slightly old-fashioned feel to this corally blood orange, it reminds me of that lipstick where there was only one color and it changed to suit the complexion of the wearer. I forget the name now. It also reminds me of that intense salmon pink color you see in certain tea roses. On the nail, the color is jubilant but gently so, sweetly flattering with a reflective sheen and a coppery orange flash under low incandescent lighting. Amongst all of the red and orange holos out there I've not seen one quite like it. It's a singular beauty!

love,
Liz

  1. Blood orange. Yep, exactly. This is way prettier than you'd think it would be with that moniker.

    1. Here's a story: I went and googled images for blood orange to see if I could find a photo that was the same color as this polish and ended up on a boutique candy website called Sugarfina, where the next thing I know I'm ordering $100 worth of various gummies for Christmas presents.... wth?

I wasn't expecting such a pretty coral when I ordered this, but it turned out to be the most perfect coral holo I've ever seen!

    2. Ahaha that's fantastic :) Those freaking gourmet gummies add up! My boyfriend loves gummies, and I once accidentally spent an upwards of $40 on a not-so-big bag of grapefruit gummies for him at some fancy candy store. Yeash, we should sell candy.

I almost didn't buy this polish because of the name, and the fact that everyone else kept describing it as pumpkin or burnt orange or something ridiculous; thank you for affirming that it is in fact coral-based, and that I'm not seeing things!! :P I'm not a huge fan of rust tones, and I'm glad I went with my instincts and picked it up because my, it's a beauty. Awesome review, but of course I've come to expect nothing less from you :)

    3. Girl, you are sweeter than a gourmet gummie! It was while I was reading reviews of this polish that I found your blog! To be honest, I don't like the name either and I usually enjoy KBShimmer's punsterisms.
