Il Était Un Vernis #monsieurjetaime

#monsieurjetaime was released by France-based boutique polish maker Il Était Un Vernis as part of the #HASHTAG collection this past December. Described as a desaturated teal by co-creators Bé and Stéphanie, this is a medium-toned muted blue-green holographic polish. To my eye, it leans toward a soft pine or skobeloff green with a bit of grey to it that gives it a soft faded flannelly look. It's one of Il Était Un Vernis' signature creme holos, bearing abundant fine holographic pigment that gives the color a delicately speckled appearance and generates a gentle velvety radiance on the nail. In direct sun, there's a subtle prismatic display with a golden bloom trailing pinpoint sparks in rainbow colors.

Application was lovely -- another of Il Était Un Vernis' characteristically excellent formulas. The consistency of #monsieurjetaime is fluid, light and creamy with a thin-to-medium viscosity and a buttery, self-leveling glide over the nail that is easily manipulated with the brand's flattened flexible brush. Pigmentation is very good. A bit of sheerness in the first coat builds easily to opacity with the second. Cleanup is easy and straightforward. #monsieurjetaime dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat does not appear to inhibit the holographic properties in any way.

Photos show two coats of #monsieurjetaime over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

This is an exceptionally pretty polish at night under artificial lighting. It loses its faded look and becomes crisp and bright, a real eyecatcher. Bé and Stéphanie are known to love teal, and they do a wonderful job evoking its varied facets.  Nice!

love,

  1. Every time I see another one of the polishes from this collection, I think it is my favorite. This one, however, surged out in front. I love it! That macro photo of your thumb! I don't normally have that much enthusiasm for the teals that lean more green. This one seems to lean to a very pretty blue, with the hint of dustiness thrown in? Basically, I wish I was at my polish desk laying this on my nails!

    1. Lara, you should treat yourself to some of these Il Était Un Vernis polishes. You've enjoyed them all so much, why not? They aren't cheap to ship, but it's not an unreasonable cost, and they are very high quality. I realize it would be breaking your rule of not acquiring new brands, but couldn't you make an exception for these? The #hashtag collection is still available, as is the Pinot Noir red that you loved, and they've just come out with a new collection for spring. Check it out, girl!

    2. I agree - it's time I invest in this brand! LOL, it's not so much a rule about new polish brands - it's more of the fact that I often only get one of a brand I haven't tried before (one out of a collection) and then don't get any others, and that one sits there on my spreadsheet all by its lonesome and bugs me to no end! One of these days, I am just going to destash them! Well, not the only Chanel I have - Malice - or the only F.U.N. I have - 24 Karat Diamond or Max Factor Fantasy Fire! I guess the only thing I can do is get more than one, hahah.

    3. Awesome! Oh I just know you're going to be so happy with yourself for trying Il Était Un Vernis, the polishes are just so well done. I know what you mean, though. When I have a single polish from a brand, I usually bought it because it was special and it still is! Two of mine that I can think of right away are Laquerlicious Lady Liberty and Kunimitsu Lucky Goldfish. I've destashed a lot of polish but when it comes to those really special ones, I just can't do it.

Typically when I try a new brand, I purchase at least three. Sometimes more, and sometimes this backfires on me when the polishes aren't what I expect. This happened to me just recently with a brand where I decided to buy a whole collection of six. So far I've tried two and they were ok, but I'm just not feeling it, you know what I mean? So here I have four untried polishes that are much less appealling to me now than they were when I bought them. It's much more practical to try just a few at first, because you can always get more. But I am not the most practical person around.

At least you won't have this problem with Il Était Un Vernis! The quality is so consistent, I can't imagine your not being pleased with any of your picks.
