Great Lakes Lacquer Blue Skies From Pain

I have another polish from The Road to Polish Con for you today. It's Blue Skies From Pain, created by Mariah of Michigan-based indie polish maker Great Lakes Lacquer exclusively for this series and Polish Con NYC, and released last month on the Polish Con website

Officially described as a dark slate blue holo with multichrome shifts of purple, blue, red and gold, the color is a dark, semi-translucent hue that has the same general tone and depth as the web color slate blue but is slightly duskier (IMO) and delicately stippled with silvery holographic particles. The holographic pigment dusts the polish with tiny rainbow sparks and creates a dimensional glow on the nail in ambient light, with a loose linear holographic flare of mixed prismatic sparkle in the sun. Abundant ultrafine multichromatic shimmers produce a pronounced shift to purple at certain angles in natural light, and to violet under incandescent light. The other color shifts are more stealthy, occuring mostly at oblique angles.

Application was great! The consistency of Blue Skies From Pain is fluid, dense and super smooth with a medium-to-thicker viscosity that I thinned to more of a thin-to-medium with polish thinner. It has a full-bodied, self-leveling glide over the nail with a bit of pull to it. Pigmentation is very good, delivering evenly opaque coverage in two medium coats. Cleanup is easy. Blue Skies From Pain dries naturally in average time to a beautiful glossy finish. Topcoat does not appear to affect the holographic properties at all.

Photos show two coats of Blue Skies From Pain over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

The name of this polish comes from the lyrics of "Wish You Were Here" by British rock band Pink Floyd, the title track of their 1975 album of the same name. Syncs well with the raison d'être of The Road to Polish Con series, no?

This is beautiful blue-purple polish with the feel of a shimmer and the prismatic effects of a holo. In addition to the color shifts, the multichrome shimmers also give the polish a certain silky, semi-metallic vibe and a sleek, glowy finish. Nice!

love,
Liz

  1. I have been following your blog for quite a while, and I have to say I love my daily dose of LacquerSlack-ing :) They say a picture's worth a thousand words....but your delightful & descriptive literary abilities are worth a thousand pictures - by the time I've read your opening description I already have a picture of the polish in my mind, and it's usually bang-on.
Have not had the advantage of experiencing Great Lakes polishes....yet :)
