Superchic Lacquer Baker's Hunger for a Bun in the Oven

Baker's Hunger for a Bun in the Oven was recently released by indie polish maker Superchic Lacquer as part of the Into the Woods collection for fall 2014. Similar to Witches Agenda for Uberness, this is a complex shimmer polish sprinkled with a handful of holographic particles. Baker's Hunger for a Bun in the Oven has a medium-dark muted blue-violet base bearing abundant copper shimmers as well as a modicum of shimmers in cerulean blue. It's a rich textile of a polish. The blue-violet color has a drop or two of grey in it giving it a soft, heathered quality, and it shares an intricate stage with the luxurious, complementary shimmer mix. The copper shimmers are a special stand-out, and at certain angles create a sparkling sheen that seems to float over the base color. At other times they are punctuated with bright cerulean blue sparks from the blue shimmers and random rainbow sparks from the holographic particles. It's a delicately balanced interdependent and harmonious mix of color and visual texture that is really very striking and unusual.

Application was pretty good for a shaky hands day. The consistency of Baker's Hunger for a Bun in the Oven is slightly gel-like, fluid, smooth and dense and spreads rather than flows over the nail. The flexible bristles of the brush fan out beautifully to distribute the polish around the cuticle and edges. Pigmentation is sheer for a medium-dark polish. Opacity must be built, and three coats are the minimum to do so. Self-leveling properties are most effective with medium coats rather than thin ones. Cleanup is easy and straightforward. Baker's Hunger for a Bun in the Oven dries naturally in average time to a smooth flat finish that wants a good topcoat for gloss, to pop the shimmer colors and ensure drying of all the layers.

Photos show three coats of Baker's Hunger for a Bun in the Oven over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

This is a beautiful, fascinating polish that is so comfortable to wear it's almost cozy. It flies a little too well under the radar to depict accurately in still photos, you need to see it in person, to wear it and walk around with it on your nails and see its dynamic interaction with light to get to know it. Even then, it will continue to surprise you with its shimmering tapestry of colors. I could live with this color until spring and not tire of it, it's that awesome. And it would be a beautiful complement to the wools and heavier, darker fabrics of fall and winter, space- and cross-dyes and heathers and tweeds, it has the capacity to complement all of them. It's understated, flattering and almost neutral, but with a sparkling glamour that shows itself in certain lights and at certain angles.

I really can't say enough good things about this polish. It's a treasure!

love,
Liz
