Nine Zero Lacquer Iris

Iris was released by Michigan-based indie polish maker Nine Zero Lacquer as part of the Spring 2016 collection last month. I remember threatening to purchase this collection outright, but self-restraint made a momentary realist out of me and I decided to get a representative polish instead of all of them, that being Iris. Like the others in the collection, this has a transparent jelly base that is packed with ultrafine silver holographic microglitters. The color is a beautiful true violet, deep enough to acquit itself well over all of those silvery microglitters. In other words, despite the transparency of the formula it still looks violet on the nail, not lavender, with the optical illusion of a darker-toned outline at the edges of the nail -- very cool and dimensionalizing! The sparkle is, of course, absolutely stunning and the star of the show. Any sort of ambient natural light is enough to summon a prismatic response of some kind and it's totally explosive in direct sun or any direct light for that matter. It will even render a vestigial linear display at oblique angles.

Application was awesome. My bottle was a little thick for my preferences, so I added some polish thinner at the outset. Thinned to a thin-to-medium viscosity, the consistency was fluid and surprisingly smooth with an easy, self-leveling glide over the nail. The teensy square microglitters are perfectly behaved, no stacking or stickups or protrusions. They provide the coverage for this polish and do so very well, with even opacity in two coats. I tried out three coats on a swatch palette just to see if that extra coat made a difference and it did not. I did my cleanup as I went along while the polish was still wet, and beyond freeing up a few microglitters to make their way into my sidewalls it presented no problems. Iris dries naturally in very good time to a smoother finish than I expected, with a touch of discernible texture that was easily smoothed by a single layer of topcoat.

Photos show two coats of iris over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

Besides their inherent inability to portray the dynamics of the sparkle, photos just don't seem to provide any indication of how immensely gratifying this polish is once you're wearing it. It feels absolutely perfect in every way on the nail, and what it may or may not lack in complexity is made up a bazillion times over by the soul-satisfying, heart-expanding, smile-inducing enjoyment it brings.

Come to think of it, I could say this exact same thing about any number of Jess's creations. What sort of magic do you think she imparts to her formulations that induces the wearer to fall in love with each and every one? If you think you know microglitter bombs and haven't tried a Nine Zero, you're missing out on a bright, sparkly piece of the pure polish enthusiast fulfillment that we continually seek with each new acquisition.

It's a sure thing, bet on it.

Liz

  1. As you might remember, I am not a purple polish person but this one is gorgeous! I do love the violet-ness of it, and that dazzle. Oh, yeah!

    1. When you see it in the bottle, you're like ok another purple microglitter. But then when you've got it on, it's just perfect. Seriously.
