Top Shelf Lacquer Huckleberry Hooch

Like Fireball, Huckleberry Hooch was released last month by Ohio-based indie polish maker Top Shelf Lacquer as one of three March 2016 custom polishes that Amy created exclusively for members of the Hella Holo Customs facebook group. This is a light-medium purple linear holo that has a floral lavender flavor but is actually closer to orchid in hue. It has a silvery quality that gives it a particularly sleek aspect on the nail, with a brilliant, highly reflective, almost metallic flash of heliotrope along the axis of light. The holographic effects are athletic and highly responsive even in fairly low ambient light, producing a flame-shaped flare of lavender in the center of the nail with a thin corona of pinpoint prismatic sparkle that shades to amethyst at the edges. Direct sun takes everything up a notch or two, brightening the purple base and generating a vivid, perfectly-delineated prismatic display in sparkling, razor thin bands of every rainbow color.

Application was fantastic. The consistency of Huckleberry Hooch is fluid, light and creamy with a medium viscosity and a velvety glide over the nail. This is a most obliging formula that goes on in thin to medium coats and happily accommodates finessing. Self-leveling properties are very good as is pigmentation, delivering evenly opaque coverage in two coats. Cleanup is easy and straightforward. Huckleberry Hooch dries naturally in very good time to a smooth shiny finish. Topcoat does not inhibit the holographic effects in any way. Nice!

Photos show two coats of Huckleberry Hooch over Pretty Serious Rock On treatment and Pretty Serious All Your Base basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

This lively, happy shade is just perfect for springtime wear! I had it on today when I stopped in at Crate & Barrel to pick up a gift that my sis had ordered for Fuzzy. The friendly counter associate complimented my manicure -- she loved the polish! I told her it was artisinally crafted and when she asked me if it was 3-free I was very proud to tell her that it was actually 5-free, as all Top Shelf creations are. We talked polish and nail care while waiting for my pick-up to be brought out, a delightful exchange that thrilled my polish loving soul.

Hella Holo Customs is a private facebook group that solicits two polish makers for custom polishes every month, which are then available only to HHC members via a special ordering code posted in the group. If you'd like to join, send an email to hellaholocustoms@gmail.com with “join” in the subject line and your facebook profile name in the message.

  2. Yes, please! This polish is so gorgeous, and looks so good on you. It is mesmerizing in motion. The brilliance of an athletic holo flame in the sun is a thing of beauty. And when it is also pretty in shade, that is an added bonus. Thank you for your wonderful review and photos!
