Lollipop Posse Lacquer Backwards and Inside Out

Like This Fruit Was Bruised, Backwards and Inside Out was released in July 2015 by Ohio-based indie polish maker Lollipop Posse Lacquer as part of the Midsummer Midnights collection. The name of this polish was taken from lyrics of the 1995 song "All I Really Want" by Alanis Morrissette.

Officially described as a "a linear holographic with a dark green base that will show a subtle, sometimes hidden, shift to navy blue," this is a shifty little chameleon of a polish. Mostly it looks like a denimy dark blue-grey, sort of a washed Atlantic blue with a delicate foamy sparkle to it as light catches individual particles of holographic pigment. Superabundant ultrafine particulate shimmers in silvery sea green float in misty clouds within and become more or less prominent depending upon viewing circumstances, sometimes melding with the base to produce varying hues of cerulean and teal and sometimes simply floating in a glimmering mist above it. In the sun, there's a splendid linear prismatic display with slender sparkling arcs in all of the rainbow colors framing a gleaming semi-metallic underlay of silvery sea green.

Application was a pleasure. The consistency of Backwards and Inside Out is fluid, smooth and dense with a medium-to-thick viscosity to which I added polish thinner. Thinned to a medium-to-thin viscosity, it had light, near-effortless, self-leveling slip over the nail. Pigmentation is sheerish on the first coat but builds quickly to wearably opaque coverage with the second. I added a third for the photos, but beyond giving the color a slightly denser feel it didn't alter the look. Cleanup is easy, no pigment travel or trace staining to speak of. Backwards and Inside Out dries naturally in very good time to a smooth shiny finish.

Photos show three coats of Backwards and Inside Out over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite. I must apologize for the quality of this manicure, especially for the remnants of yesterday's manicure, which I didn't notice until I edited the photos. My bad! Also, any light purple you see is my shirt reflected in the polish.

I love unusual blues and Backwards and Inside Out is certainly that. It's beautifully constructed, with an exquisite balance between the pigment, the shimmers and the holo that allows these components both to combine for unique looks and shine individually. It is entirely without pretense on the nail, shifting and shimmering at will, with a protean quality that is sometimes showy and overt and sometimes moody and retiring. A very interesting and beautiful polish!

    1. Thanks, Lara! Perhaps the traces of red are harder to see in the photos with my overly rubicund coloring, but I could definitely see them as I was applying the polish. Took the wind right out of my sails!
