OPI Alcatraz Rocks

Alcatraz Rocks was released by OPI as part of the San Francisco collection for fall/winter 2013. It's one of OPI's "liquid sand" textured finish polishes, with a base of deep blue, almost a navy, with violet undertones filled with texturizing grit and ultrafine pink, blue and gold microglitter shards.

This polish is not difficult to apply but care must be taken to apply it in thin even coats. Too thick, and the base will overwhelm the texture and microglitters and leave it too shiny. Tightening the cap and giving the bottle a good shake every now and then during application will help keep the brush from getting too stiff. Opacity is good with complete coverage in two coats. Alcatraz Rocks dries naturally in longer than average time to a sandy textured finish. Although it may look dry on the surface, the polish underneath takes a good while longer to dry and until then it is vulnerable to dents, gashes and smushing (a scientific term... not!), where the texture is actually pushed down into the polish leaving a smoother, shinier spot on the finish. You can see how the thinner the initial coats are, the better it will turn out in the end!

Photos show two coats of Alcatraz Rocks over treatment and basecoat with no topcoat. I wish they did justice to this polish, but they really don't. I did not try topcoating this polish as I enjoy the sandy texture of the natural finish, but from photos I've seen online it is beautiful topcoated as well providing you use a few layers as this is a topcoat hungry polish.

This is an amazing polish. In diffuse light, it comes across as a matte deep blue with a silvery sheen of sparkle that rides the sandy texture like an aura, very dimensional and appealing. But the real magic happens in direct light. That's when all the colors come out to play. I love the dark blue with the iridescent pink, it looks like a natural gemstone,

In the pictures I've seen of Alcatraz Rocks with a glossy topcoat, it is very sparkly and the violet undertones of the blue give it a smoky purple look. Next time I wear this I think I'll probably have to try it out with a topcoat. Although I love it matte, I'm curious to see how it changes up with the glitter under glass look.

Unusual, complex, interesting and overall just a lovely unique combination of elements, this is a wonderful addition to any polish enthusiast's collection.

love,
Liz
