Hare Polish Wrapped in Plastic over China Glaze Sea Spray

Wrapped in Plastic was released by indie polish maker Hare Polish as part of the Welcome to Twin Peaks collection for winter 2013. This is a pale blue-grey jelly with multiples sizes of white, aqua and iridescent gold glitter hexes and squares. I've seen photos of it where it leaned blue and some where it leaned grey; on me, it leans blue. On the nail it is delicate and translucent, catching a lot of light. The aqua and white glitters have a foggy presence, misted over by the jelly base that does allow the iridescent gold glitters to shine through with pinkish sparks of light.

Wrapped in Plastic being as translucent as it is, I was worried that the staining of my nails would show through and alter the base color. So I chose to layer this polish over China Glaze Sea Spray, which turned out to be a very good match. I used one thin coat of Sea Spray and layered two coats of Wrapped in Plastic over that, and it worked perfectly. Wrapped in Plastic applies nicely, with a fluid, user-friendly consistency that allowed for a lovely, random dispersal of glitters across the nail. I may have applied my coats a little thick, because I had some glitter tumbling and sinkage, as well as a few protrusions over the free edge. Cleanup was easy and Wrapped in Plastic dries naturally in good time to a shiny but textured finish that is a little topcoat hungry. I used two coats of Sephora X topcoat to smooth the surface and attain a glossy shine. It bubbled something fierce, but worked well to even out the surface of the polish.

Photos show two coats of Wrapped in Plastic over one coat of Sea Spray over treatment and basecoat with a double topcoat of Sephora X.

Twin Peaks, the inspiration for the collection that this polish is a part of, was an American television serial directed by filmmaker David Lynch that ran from 1990 to 1991. The catalyst for the show was the murder of the town's homecoming queen, Laura Palmer, who was found nude wrapped in plastic washed up on the bank of a river. Thus the name of this polish. You can see Nikole's inspiration for Wrapped in Plastic in a promo still from the show....

Laura Palmer found dead, nude and wrapped in plastic

The blue tone of her lips, the grey white of the clear plastic, the chunks of river sediment adhering to her skin... it's amazing how Nikole took these macabre particularities and transformed them into a polish creation that is not only accurate, it's also pretty! I think David Lynch himself might deign to wear this polish, if indeed he were to wear nail polish. That he'd certainly appreciate the humor in Nikole's masterful interpretation of this gruesome moment in the series, I have no doubt.

As pretty as Wrapped in Plastic is shiny, I think that it's even prettier matted. It softens and becomes even more diaphanous. I used one thin layer of OPI Matte topcoat for this look.

Wrapped in Plastic turned out to be perfect for today's rainy weather. It'd be stunning as a snowfall polish in winter, too! I particularly love the smallest iridescent gold hex glitters in this polish, and the white squares. This is a lovely polish with a humorously morbid inspiration and Hare's hallmark complex construction, as only Nikole could do it.

love,
Liz

  1. This is so pretty! I love how soft and serene it is. It looks great shiny and as a matte too. I had no idea it was inspired by a death of a character on a show, but now I can totally see where Nikole got her inspiration for the colors. I'll have to add it on my Hare wishlist!

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Melissa! That's a great observation, it does have a soft serenity to it -- in stark contrast to its inspiration!
