Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer Stop Involving Me!

Like yesterday's Look at These @#$holes, Stop Involving Me is part of the new Leave the Sun Behind Me collection by Georgia-based indie polish maker Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer. This collection, a series of neon polishes inspired by director Wes Anderson's 2007 film The Darjeeling Limited, will release tomorrow, 24 August, at 3:30pm EDT in creator Julie's big cartel storefront.

Officially described as a "neon yellow with copper shimmers and gold glass flecks," Stop Involving Me is a very bright cool-toned yellow that leans to chartreuse in the bottle. Once on the nail, though, it loses most of its pretenses to green and evolves into a light lemony shade that is very like Crayola's unmellow yellow, abetted by the subtle warmth of minute copper microflake shimmers and golden glass flecks. The creme/jelly hybrid formula is translucent by design, allowing the shimmers and flecks to glisten beautifully from within. This creates a delicate, ethereal quality that is particularly charming in a yellow and reminds me very much of the satiny, glistening appearance of buttercup petals.

Application was pretty darn fun for a yellow polish (yellows are usually not so fun to apply). The consistency of Stop Involving Me is fluid, light and very smooth with a silky flow over the nail and exceptional self-leveling properties for a yellow. The first coat is sheer and can be streaky. I recommend using a floating technique with this polish, holding the brush at a very low angle to the nail and with the lightest touch possible, allowing the bead of polish to transfer color to the nail. Avoid overstroking as it will lead to streaks and patches (ask me how I know). Opacity is built over multiple coats, which like some extra dry time in between. I used three, which pretty much minimized nail line visibility. Any unevenness in coverage that you see in my pics I gotta chalk up to user error (see note on overstroking), and I think most folks will be able to produce smooth, even opaque coverage with three coats. Cleanup is easy and straightforward with a tiny bit of stickiness on the part of the copper microflakes. Stop Involving Me dries naturally in good time to a smooth, satiny finish. Topcoat adds a becoming gloss, acts to further smooth any unevenness in coverage and amplifies the presence of the components.

Photos show three coats of Stop Involving Me over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite. Wow, such a difficult color to photograph! In these pics, it appears with a chartreuse lean to it, like the bottle color, but in person it is more yellow, less green. It reminds me of the yellow you find in Dansk enamelware, maybe not quite as yolky but a nice bright lemon yellow.

This polish gets its name from the oft repeated refrain of Jack, the youngest of three brothers who are the main characters in The Darjeeling Limited. Jack, for me, was the least emotionally accessible brother in the film. I found him somewhat inscrutable, and had to look beyond his little "porn star mustache" for visual clues written into the script to detect the vulnerabilities of his character -- like the fact that he never wore shoes, or that the book he was writing was entitled "Invisible Ink." I am incredibly impressed with the insight Julie shows by naming the yellow of the Leave the Sun Behind Me collection after Jack. In the meaning of colors, yellow resonates with the intellect, the writer, the entertainer, the critic. Yellow is the practical thinker, depends on itself and prefers not to get emotionally involved. This is exactly how Jack would like to present himself to the world. And yet he is deeply vulnerable, impulsive and longs to connect. Julie totally nailed the irony of his character with this yellow polish. It's perfect!

The Leave the Sun Behind Me collection will be available for purchase tomorrow, 24 August, at 3:30pm EDT in Julie's big cartel shop. Price for Stop Involving Me will be $8.50USD full, $5USD mini.

  2. What a unique and pretty polish. Even though people will notice the color, this is one of those polishes that usually only the person who wears it is able to fully appreciate. I love the submerged flakies in it.
A very thoughtful review. Not only do you convey your understanding of the polish (Liz's Sense of Polish- like Smilla's Sense of Snow *smiley face* ), you also touch on the perception of the color yellow and its connection to the personality of Jack. Very nice.
LOL at your *streaks and patches (ask me how I know)* !

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed the post, Lara! Yellow is not an easy color. One of the reasons I liked this one so much was because it did tie in amazingly well with the character of Jack from The Darjeeling Limited. Julie did an amazing job matching the polishes in this collection with aspects of the film. I love that!
