Nine Zero Lacquer Corn Maize

Time for the infrequent yellow polish!

Today's feature is from a fledgling indie brand whose creator is well-acquainted with the indie polish scene -- Nine Zero Lacquer from Jess of jessFACE90 on YouTube, whose succint, on-point swatch videos are a staple resource for any polish enthusiast. The Nine Zero polish I have for you today is Corn Maize, released in September this year as part of the brand's debut Harvest Festival collection.

Jess describes this as a mustard yellow holo. It's kind of like if you took a sunny primary yellow and darkened with it just the slightest greenish brown cast, like the gemstone citrine. Fuzzy calls it a curry yellow. The holo pigment has a delicate twinkle in bright indirect light and gives the polish a fascinating, semi-translucent dimensionality -- it looks like golden syrup or highly polished amber. Direct sun brightens the color dramatically and generates a vestigial prismatic flair of sparks in blue, green, yellow and orange that frames a glittering central blaze of bright yellow. This is not an ephemeral shade, it has a substantial presence with a certain sophisticated weightiness that suits it perfectly. I think it is utterly amazing -- tremendously chic and fashion forward. Yellow polishes outside of summer neons and spring pastels are not common and holos are scarcer still, so this is truly a rare gem.

Application was equally amazing. The consistency of Corn Maize is fluid, creamy and dense with a buttery, even glide over the nail and outstanding self-leveling properties. It's the kind of formula that makes application feel almost effortless, which speaks volumes considering this is a yellow. Pigmentation is excellent with completely even opaque coverage in two quick coats -- no patchiness of any kind. I'm so impressed! Cleanup is easy and straightforward, with no pigment travel or trace staining. Corn Maize dries naturally in very good time to a smooth shiny finish. A glossy topcoat is most becoming and does not hinder the holo effects in any way.

Photos show two coats of Corn Maize over Pretty Serious Rock On treatment and Pretty Serious All Your Base basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite. Apologies for the large number of pics, I just couldn't narrow it down. This polish looks very different in indirect light than it does in the sun, so I've included photos of both.

I adore this. It is perfect! If you have no yellow polishes in your collection because they're always such a pain to apply and you think you'd never wear the color anyway, this is the yellow to complete your color palette. Seriously, every polish enthusiast should have this in their stash. Not only is it eminently wearable -- it's absolutely stunning on the nail, sleek and unreservedly stylish -- the formula is to die for.

In my wildest nail polish dreams I never imagined that I would get this excited about a yellow lacquer, but this is not a typical yellow. It is unique. No doubt about it.

love,
Liz

  1. Good lordy, that polish is brilliant! While my favorite color is sunshine or lemon yellow, the only yellow polishes I have are light or pastel. I am not attracted to the darker yellow, but this one, wow, I love it. Thank you for all the wonderful photos - they really show off this polish. It is so unique!

    1. I'm so happy you enjoyed the post and the polish, Lara! I think it amazing, like a veneer of yellow amber on your nails. So unlike any other yellow I own, and makes for a surprisingly chic and sophistacted-looking manicure. Highly recommend!
