Girly Bits Roger That

There are many excellent reasons to support indie polish makers but I'm going to tell you about two in particular: altruism and generosity of spirit. The polish I'm featuring in this post, Roger That by indie polish maker Girly Bits, tells the story of how an artisanal polish maker honored and supported, and continues to honor and support her community in the face of tragedy.

July 21st, 2012 our community was shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden death of a local teen, Brady Rogers. Brady and his closest friends and family were at his home celebrating his high school graduation when Brady collapsed and died of an asthma attack.

In his 6'4" red haired, blue eyed frame, Brady was larger than life in spirit and personality. He was one of those kids who left an impression on everyone whose path he crossed, and he loved his friends and family deeply and wasn't afraid to show it. My daughter came to me and asked if I could create a polish in Brady's memory, and donate the proceeds to the Brady Rogers Memorial Bursary Fund at Kingsville District High School, from which he graduated just weeks before. She and her friends came up with two colour inspirations, a sparkly blue, just like Brady's eyes, and a beautiful orange, just like his ginger red hair. The names? "Roger That" and "Gentle Ginger."

$5.00 from every bottle sold goes to the Brady Rogers Memorial Bursary Fund at Kingsville High School.

At the time of this young man's death over a year ago, Pam (the owner and creative force behind Girly Bits) also donated over 150 bottles of Roger That to his family to be sold with 100% of the sales going to the Brady Rogers Memorial Bursary Fund. A bursary is monies donated to an educational institution for use in supporting deserving attendees, so you see how Pam's generosity is further extended beyond immediate circumstance. And she continues to make and offer these special polishes, raising and donating funds in honor of Brady Rogers.

As if the back story alone doesn't make this polish collection-worthy, it is also a fabulous blue holo. Roger That is a saturated medium-toned bright true blue linear holo polish, creamy with holographic pigment and beautifully formulated as well. Photos show two coats of Roger That over treatment/basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

It's raining today so while some of these pics were taken in the natural lightbox that is my upstairs bath, I also took some downstairs in the kitchen under the halogens to maximize the holographic flair. If I included a blurry photo or two, I had my reasons. *grin*

You can get an idea from these just how prismatic the holo flair in Roger That would be in direct sunlight, which will show it to its best advantage. This is a wonderful holo polish with gorgeous saturated color. Even when the holo pigment isn't activated, it brings a dimensionality to the polish that lets you know this is not a simple blue creme. 

This is tribute to Brady Rogers who touched so many during his life continues to touch the hearts of polish enthusiasts around the world. In memory of Brady, it is also a reminder to all of us who experience it to cherish the ones we love now, in the moment.
