Barielle Thrilling and Elle's Spell

Lit from within alert!

Barielle Thrilling is a dark ruby red with overtones of deep rose. It is a shimmer polish with a highly reflective metallic-like finish and a gift-wrap-ribbon sheen. On the nail, it appears darker around the edges and brighter toward the center, the wonderful lit from within look.

I won this polish on ebay with a couple of others by Barielle back in the spring when I first started collecting. When it arrived, I took one look at it and said, yeah right, and put at the back of my Barielles, sure I'd never want to wear such a color. Oh the errors of the biased mind! I have it on right now and it is perfectly lovely, a rich velvety luxurious ruby, and looks wonderful with my cool-toned complexion.

When I began to apply Thrilling I noticed immediately that it was a bit thick and added a few squirts of polish thinner, which helped immensely. The consistency is dense and oily but easily controlled and I had no adhesion problems when wrapping the tips of my nails -- sometimes shimmers don't want to adhere to the vertical slope of the free edge but that wasn't the case with Thrilling. My application needed only a little clean up with little of the peripheral staining that often accompanies deep reds.

I was afraid that this polish would show brushstrokes but a coat of Seche Vite seems to have smoothed them out, and much to my relief there has been no tip shrinkage. Photos show two coats of Thrilling over my usual basecoat duo with one coat of Seche Vite to top.

Fab! Makes my nails look like delicious little candies! There's definitely a candy apple effect with this polish, if it a touch more yellow to it and was more of a fire engine type red it would be an absolutely TDF color for a car! When I used to do auto detailing I loved to do red cars and trucks more than any other color. I'd get so charged up from the color I would work into the night. I remember rubbing on one of our neighbor's huge metallic red Dodge pick up at midnight under an umbrella. *lol* LOVE red vehicles, they make my synapses fire like the Fourth of July.

Thrilling is rather one of those mood elevating reds, dark enough to be lit from within but not at all blackened or vampy. Love it!

Elle's Spell is probably one of Barielles most popular polishes, I think due to the fact that it was the first USA made mainstream polishes to have flakies in it. To my somewhat limited knowledge there's still nothing like it out there that isn't foreign made. Elle's Spell has a deep true red jelly base loaded with iridescent color-shifting flakies that change from red to orange to green to blue depending on the angle of light.

Being a jelly it is very sheer. Though I've seen photos of manicures done where it's been built up to opacity by itself I wasn't inclined to try that so I chose to layer it over Thrilling. Elle's Spell applies easily and well, and I used two coats plus a topcoat of Seche Vite over the above manicure for the photos.

A note about the pics. I deliberately went out of my way to include photos of Elle's Spell with the showiest flakie display. In real life, this polish mostly appears as a shimmery deep red, darker than Thrilling, to the casual eye. Stealth flakie!

Gorgeous, no? And even when it's not being angled for best possible display of flakies, it still such a beautiful polish... it shimmers in a way that reminds me of how you can see heat shimmering in the air when you soft focus on the horizon on a really hot day.

Elle's Spell over Thrilling is a more distinctive and unique look than Thrilling by itself and to me is more suited to special occasions and cooler seasons. I think Thrilling by itself is a great look anytime. I've seen photos online of Elle's Spell layered over medium and dark purples and blues and it is even more spectacular than it is over red. My next Elle's Spell manicure will be one of those combos for sure!

love,
Aunt Liz
