Emily de Molly Reflection

Reflection was released by Australian indie polish maker Emily de Molly (EdM) as a stand-alone polish in September 2015. Officially described as a turquoise blue subtle holo, it has just enough finely-milled holographic pigment to generate what I'll call a light linear prismatic display in direct sun, sparkly and beautiful with a flame-shaped flare but not as dramatically delineated as some linear holos. The medium-light turquoise blue color is creamy and vivid in bright light. In shade and low light it has a slightly deeper, more muted look that reminds me of Apple's Bondi Blue imac, and the holographic pigment serves as a subtle, dimensionalizing shimmer.

Application was lovely. The consistency of Reflection is fluid and very creamy with a medium viscosity and a plush, buttery glide over the nail. It has an eminently user-friendly formula that is amenable to thin or thicker coats, self-levels beautifully and is easy to manipulate with EdM's sleek and compact flattened-style brush. Pigmentation is very good, delivering completely even, opaque coverage in two coats. I added a third to ensure the non-appearance of my nail ridges and to see if it made a difference to the look, but it really doesn't. Cleanup is easy and straightforward. Reflection dries naturally in very good time to a fabulous glossy finish.

Photos show three coats of Reflection over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

I think this is a great all-purpose turquoise blue. The dainty prismatic flare really complements the bright, clean color in the sun -- it's showy without going over the top. And the color is gentle but substantial in the shade with a lovely dimensionality and a sleek, glossy presence. Reflection is not going to replace your favorite neon, but I can see it doing pool, beach or barbecue duty with flair. It's the kind of polish that says, "Relax! Enjoy!"

Very, very pretty!

  1. This polish is such an adorable, charming one. I love that basic color and then to add that delightful flame, oh my! The interplay between the base color and the twinkling holo flare reminds me of the Caribbean waters I was able to snorkel in when I lived in the Southern Hemisphere. I am unabashedly in love with this polish!

    1. Ooh, where did you live? I was lucky enough to visit the Bahamas several times as a child when my grandfather had a place on Green Turtle Cay and then later while in college visiting the family of my boyfriend's roommate, who is a native Bahamian. This shade reminds me of the gorgeous blue-greens you see in the warm shallow waters around all the islands and cays as you fly in.

This polish is exceptionally pretty in bright ambient light, when the holographic properties are fueled just enough to give it that beautiful dimensional glow that creme holos have.

    2. We lived in north Venezuela, by the Caribbean coast. Beautiful waters. There were islands just offshore we went to - they had gentler sandy beaches and nice coral reefs (on the calm side). The Venezuelan coast where we lived was mainly rocky with sheer mountains meeting the water. There were a few places that had sandy beaches, but the islands were so close and much nicer for relaxing on nice sand beaches and swimming in the cool clear water (with gentle sandy bottoms). Very beautiful. We spent most of our weekends there!

    3. Wow! Sounds incredibly beautiful. How amazing it must have to live in such dramatic geography, and to travel over the ocean to tropical islets on a regular basis! I can almost imagine....
