Emily de Molly Flatline

Flatline was released in April 2016 by Australian indie polish maker Emily de Molly as one of about seven new polishes for that month. Creator Hayley describes this one as "a light taupe grey ultra holo, with strong purple undertones." It reads as a desaturated, slightly muted lavender on the nail, like a pastel version of Crayola's purple mountain majesty. The holographic effects are pervasive and athletic, creating a shimmering linear prismatic flare even in low light and giving the polish a gleaming semi-metallic underlay of pale peachy pink.

Application was wonderful -- this just a love of a polish! The consistency is fluid and super smooth with a medium viscosity and a fluent, creamy, self-leveling slip over the nail that goes on naturally in thin-to-medium coats and is a pleasure to manipulate with the brand's sleekly compact, flattened-style brush. Pigmentation is very good to excellent, two thin coats will give you completely even, opaque coverage. Cleanup is easy. Flatline dries naturally in very good time to a smooth, shiny finish. Topcoat does not in any way interfere with the holographic effects.

Photos show two coats of Flatline over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

This is a gorgeous polish. It feels especially well-suited for spring -- the color really resonates with all of those purple early bloomers. Silky and sleek on the nail, the holographic effects make it dimensional and ever-changing. Subtle, nacreous hues of pale pink, sky blue and gold are regularly present in the prismatic display, so delicate and pretty! Direct light elicits a full linear complement of bright rainbow colors, but it's so soft and graceful in ambient light, almost dreamy, that I like that look even better. As I said above, a love of a polish!

  1. What a beautiful holo! Belive it or not, I don't have a single EdM.

    1. Shoot, honey! Emily de Molly is a must try! I recommend Hayley's creations without reservation, her formulas are on par with the most eminently-paintable and consistently excellent you can think of and the EdM brush is one of my favorites -- flattened, compact, sleek and flexible, just a dream to work with. I tend to gravitate towards her holos and shimmers, but she releases a range of polishes every month.

EdM used to be hard to get hold of but now that there's a US-based website, it's a snap! Treat yourself!
