Picture Polish Ocean

Ocean was released by Picture Polish as part of the Blogger Collaborations 2013 series in April 2013. This polish was created in concert with Kelly of Kelly's Kolors, based upon her inspiration. You can read Kelly's post about Ocean and working with Picture Polish to develop it here.

Kelly describes this polish as turquoise, but there is such a dazzling clear quality to this cyanic shade that to my eye it leans as much to sky as to sea. It's like a slightly lighter, more translucent and dimensional version of cerulean blue. This is such a pretty polish! It has a medium-toned vibrant aquamarine jelly base bearing abundant Picture Polish signature holographic flake shimmers. In any circumstance but complete shade, these shimmers sparkle like crazy in every rainbow hue but the sparks of color you notice most are the ones analogous to the aquamarine base: azure blue, green, indigo and yellow, with additional sparks of orange and pale violet. It's just sublime! Like you dipped your fingers in a warm, shallow, rippling tropical sea and carried the colors off on your nails.

Application was great! The consistency of Ocean is fluid and very smooth, with an easy self-leveling flow over the nails and none of the stickiness that sometimes accompanies jellies. As a jelly, it's quite translucent and the first coat is very sheer, but evenly so (i.e. no streaks). I was a little nervous about getting coverage opaque enough to disguise my yellow-stained nails, but the color builds to opacity well enough to camouflage the staining in three medium coats. Cleanup was easy and straightforward with no trace of staining. Ocean dries naturally in very good time to a shade that's slightly lighter than bottle color and a glassy smooth, glossy finish.

Photos show three coats of Ocean over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

This polish has the kind of sparkly dynamics and dimensionality that just won't show in a still image. You have to move it around and see all those tiny sparks fly to know what it's like in person. Kind of like this:

As fantastic as it looks in the photo, you know it's a million times MORE fantastic to be there for real!

  1. Ooh la la, cerulean ocean!! I love the image of a shallow sea and plating one's nails with its sparkling waves... Like the most gorgeous dream. It has been and is going to be a stressful couple of days (...weeks ...months) but the thought of running my fingers through warm, turquoise waters is instantly soothing <3

    1. Cerulean is such a beautiful word, don't you think? I once read somewhere, I forget where now, that the most beautiful phrase in the English language is "cellar door," but "cerulean ocean" is just as beautiful to my sensibilities. Sending you visions of tranquility to help you shrug off the stress, my dear!
