Superficially Colorful Lacquer Atokirina

Atokirina was released by Israel-based indie polish maker Superficially Colorful Lacquer as part of the Life on Pandora collection in August 2014. It's is a near-neon medium hot pink with finely-milled scattered holographic pigment. This fiercely vibrant, cool-leaning hue is a bit more potent than a Barbie pink, I think, with an intensely floral quality and clarity to the color that gives it a graceful feel on the nail. I mean, it's certainly very bright, but it's not the kind of polish that's going to poke you in the eye. The modicum of holo pigment adds a gorgeous, lively glass-fleck-like sparkle in direct sun  and produces some dimensional violet nuancing to the pink in indirect light. There's a hint of coral-red shading around the edges of the nail that I interpret as a nod to Atokirina's neon heritage -- you can also see this in the bottle, where it shows as more of a coral-orange.

Application was delightful, in spite of the fact that I'm having a shaky hands day and made a bit of a mess on certain nails. The consistency of Atokirina is fluid, creamy and dense with velvety smooth glide over the nail and none of the chalkiness that often accompanies neon-like shades. Self-leveling properties are excellent as is the pigmentation. Like Tsahik, this can be a one-coater with careful application. I used two coats for this manicure, the second in an attempt to correct some cuticle curves. Take a look at my tattered pink cuticles in the photos and ask me how that turned out! So there's some pigment transfer during cleanup that will tint the nail surrounds, but it's much less noticeable in person than in my photos where the macro makes sure you can see every flaw. Atokirina dries in very good time to the matte-ish/satiny/rubbery finish characteristic of neons. Topcoat enhances the holo effects and seems to bring additional dimensionality to the look of the polish on the nail.

Photos show two coats of Atokirina over Seche Rebuild treatment and Pretty Serious All Your Base basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

I'm not sure that the lovely dimensionality of this polish can be chalked up to the holo effects alone. I think that Jin, the owner and creative force behind Superficially Colorful, is showing us some polish-making magic here with her combination of neon and non-neon pigments. Although it demonstrates certain neon traits, the color has a sophisticated depth and lucidity that make it more womanly and floral than you would expect from a hot pink.

Not that it's an overly serious color, either. This polish is all about big fun! Take it for drinks or dining alfresco this spring and see for yourself!

love,
Liz
