Too Fancy Lacquer The Crown Jewel

You didn't really think I'd run out of Too Fancy Lacquer to swatch, did you? :)

The Crown Jewel was released by Hong Kong-based indie polish maker Too Fancy Lacquer as a stand alone in January 2014. This is a very dark sapphire blue scattered holographic polish. In bright indirect light and shade, it has a near-black appearance that is tinged with a breath of blue-violet and subtly speckled with silvery flecks of holo pigment. In sun, though, you can see that it's a deep but brilliant sparkling sapphire blue, and the holographic flecks sends out bright sparks in rainbow colors like stars in the night sky. It's a secret squirrel kind of holo, understated and reserved at the outset but full of sparkly treasure once you get to know it.

Application was delicious. The consistency of The Crown Jewel is fluid, light and creamy with the perfectly balanced viscosity that Charlene has perfected in her holos. It is user friendly, easily manipulated with Too Fancy's flattened flexible brush and amenable to thin or thicker coats as desired with a smooth, self-leveling glide over the nail. Pigmentation is excellent. With a generously loaded brush and the appropriate mojo, this could be a one coater. But I find that two medium coats is best for full richness of color and to ensure completely even opaque coverage. Cleanup is surprisingly easy for a dark polish this well pigmented, with very little pigment travel and no residual staining. From what I understand, this polish is completely non-staining upon removal, but if I find differently I'll add a postscript. The Crown Jewel dries naturally in very good time to a silky smooth, slightly flat finish that loves a glossy topcoat to look its best. Topcoat does not diminish the holographic properties of the polish in any way.

Photos show two coats of The Crown Jewel over treatment and basecoat with a bubbly topcoat of Seche Vite.

I love dark blues and I appreciate how beautifully this classy, deep sapphire scattered holo resembles the real gemstone. It's not ostentatious but it has a glorious depth to it with an easy elegance that is quite approachable despite the reserved demeanor. And of course the formula is stellar, which is always a win!

love,
Liz
