Two Butter London Holos: Fishwife and Trustafarian

Butter London's Fishwife is a lovely light blue-green holo powered by what looks to be relatively large holographic particles that produce a loose linear prismatic flair in direct artificial or natural light, and give the polish the beautiful creamy grained appearance common to polishes containing holographic pigments.

It's nicely formulated with a smooth liquid but dense consistency that makes application a pleasure. The polish goes where you put it and stays there. Fishwife is a little sheer and patchy after the first coat but is completely opaque with two. It dries naturally in average time to a satiny finish. Adding clear topcoat does not diminish the holo flair and actually boosts the colors.

As we're experiencing heavy cloud cover and rain here in North Carolina today (I love it when the barometric pressure drops, it's my favorite kind of weather) I didn't have the opportunity to photograph Fishwife in direct sun, so the kitchen halogens had to suffice. The polish is a little washed out in some of the pics -- the base color is actually a bit more vivid in person.

Photos show two coats of Fishwife over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

Trustafarian is a light soft sagey yellow-green holo polish composed similarly to Fishwife, with the same relatively large holo particles that register a loose linear prismatic flair. The particles add a silvery aura in low light to both of these polishes. Trustafarian additionally has a golden look that it takes on in certain direct lighting situations, making it a bit more of a chameleon than Fishwife.

This one also seems a bit more sheer than Fishwife. I used two coats here also but they were thick ones. As a result Trustafarian took much longer to dry completely and, as you'll see, I doinked my my left middle finger nail filling up the electric kettle. Oh the hazards of tea making!

Butter London's holographic offerings feel a bit buttoned up compared to something like China Glaze's OMG collection or Nubar's holographic lacquers not to mention all the fantastic holo creations by indie polish makers out there. No, they don't have the sharply defined linear prismatic flair that manufacturers using finer holo particles have produced and their colors aren't the most dramatic. But they are beautiful and very user friendly. I am liking both of these two I've shown here very much. Dodgy Barnett (silver) is the other holo I was hoping to include in this post, however I couldn't find it. *D'oh!* But I'm betting that it is similar in composition and prismatic effect to Fishwife and Trustafarian.

I'm all props to Butter London for including holos in its core line that are lovely, elegant and eminently wearable.

love,
Aunt Liz

  1. Both swatches have happy little rainbows aplenty. Trustafarian is my favorite!
