Girly Bits You're My Hooper Hero

You're My Hooper Hero was released by Canadian indie polish maker Girly Bits as part of the Hoop There It Is collection, a set of neons and ultra brights with names inspired by creator Pam's hula hoop regimen, last month. This is my very first dedicated neon experience and let me say right now, I get it and I'm loving it! I was under the mistaken impression that wearing a neon would be a shrill, screechy experience but no! It's more of a reverberating electric hum. The energy is fantastic!

You're My Hooper Hero is a neon watermelon or hot coral pink, a punchy fruity floral shade that's a perfect mix of pink, orange and red. In the sun, the pink in it really shines and it has an intense, creamy reddish pink coral appearance that is absolutely stunning. In dim light and shade, where it's neon qualities are most apparent, it likes to lean orange with a kiss of deep hot pink, a poppy-like hue that is so very happy to be here, thank you. Fabulous!

Application was a wonder. The formula reminds me of a crelly with a bit of translucence to it, but it applies like the most luscious, buttery creme you can think of. The consistency is fluid, full-bodied and very creamy, with a lush, even glide over the nail and great self-leveling properties, which I wasn't expecting. Pigmentation is buildable. After two coats I could still see my smile lines so I added a third and was happy with that. I'm sure that many will be just as happy with the coverage at two coats, especially those with shorter nails. Cleanup was also a surprise. With such an intense color I anticipated lots of pigment travel but it was really quite minimal with no noticeable residual staining. You're My Hooper Hero dries naturally in good time to the flat, semi-matte finish characteristic of neons. A glossy topcoat raises the juiciness of the color exponentially.

Photos show three coats of You're My Hooper Hero over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

Hot! This is a blast to wear. I picked up two others and the glitter topper from the Hoop There It Is collection when I ordered this one and I can't wait to try them too! To be honest, I'm kind of regretting that I didn't get the whole collection. My picks didn't include either of the greens or the yellow. Those are so fluorescent they scare me a little. But if they're as fun to wear as You're My Hooper Hero, I think I might want to try them....

love,
Liz

  1. A shrill, screechy experience- haha! You know, I never much cared for neons either, since they are generally so overdone, but recently in life I have found that there are few compositions more compelling than a natural neutral glowing with slivers of fluorescence. Madelinetosh makes a few neon yarns, and they are just magnificent worked in amongst subtle ivories, grays, and other subdued tones. I think neon polish serves much the same function in an outfit, adding just a spark of energy :) So fabulous!! Love this on you!

    1. Madelinetosh Unicorn Tails yarns are FABULOUS! Just incredibly beautiful, I can't imagine the pleasure it would be to work with some of those colorways. I used to have a photo collection of hand-dyed yarn closeups from etsy that I would use as a slideshow screensaver. Drool city!

My experience with the Hoop There It Is neons is going so well that I now find neons from all over are singing weird siren songs. For years I've passed all of them right by without a thought. But the Girly Bits formula has spoiled me for any neon that doesn't go on like butter. Marisa, they are so good!

Congratulations on your graduation, my dear!

    2. LIZ ARE YOU A KNITTER??!!!! Right next to polish, yarn is another outlet in which I exercise my obsession with color. Once I'm all settled and have time to breathe again, I'm hoping to publish a few patterns I've knitted up, and start expanding Tiny Twinklings' scope to polish, knitting, and other beautiful things. What do you think?? :D

This polish is so glossy and smooth and just the right amount of juicy and squishy, so I can just imagine that it has ruined you for all others!! So awesome.

Oh my gosh, I can't WAIT for graduation (and yet, I have so much to do that I kinda can... haha). June 15 is galloping right up. I actually just sent back my job contract- starting full time at my old firm in August!! I'm looking forward to being home and starting life in the real world :)
