Polish My Life Retro Green Scene

Polish My Life Retro Green Scene was released by Brooklyn, NY-based indie polish maker Polish My Life as part of the All Things Vintage collection for spring 2015. This is a pale laurel green, a whitened yellow-green with grey overtones and a soft, silvery quality like the underside of a leaf. It's a brilliant contemporary take on the avocado color that was so prevalent in the decor and appliances of the 70s. I have to admit that growing up in a kitchen full of avocado green appliances and cabinetry has left me with a certain affection for the shade, however I draw the line when it comes to carpet. Retro Green Scene is an ironic name for this polish given how utterly modern it feels on the nail. Like the other polishes in this collection, it contains subtle ultrafine pearly shimmers that give it a silvery luster like highly polished olivine stone. It's a gentle shade with a graceful soothing presence, a green for all seasons.

Application was delicious. How Shaneka manages to create these whitened colors with such creamy, tractable, user-friendly formulas is a mystery in this world and I, for one, am delighted to be on the receiving end of the proposition. The consistency of Retro Green Scene is fluid, creamy and dense with a smooth velvety flow over the nail and excellent self-leveling properties. Pigmentation is very good with completely even opaque coverage available in two coats. I used three for the purposes of this post but I'd happily wear it at two were I not subjecting it to a macro lens. Cleanup is easy and straightforward with little if any pigment travel and no residual staining. Retro Green Scene dries naturally in very good time to a slick glossy finish. Nice!

Photos show three coats of Retro Green Scene over treatment and basecoat with a topcoat of Seche Vite.

I wish I had my usual flotilla of photos to show you, but somewhere in the process of uploading them the green became pixilated and funky-looking. Like this:

I've set my uploads not to be enhanced in any way, so I'm at a loss as to how they got scrambled but this isn't the first time it's happened with a green polish. I can only guess that it has to do with how my camera captures certain greens that is mistranslated. All of the photos looked fine on my mac prior to the upload, but only the few you see were not affected.

Image issues aside, I do love this polish. It's sleek and soft, a combination that I find to be flattering on the nail and pleasing to the eye, plus it has a great formula. Green lovers, this one's for you!

love,
Liz

  1. Your posts simply just put me in a good mood :) "a soft, silvery quality like the underside of a leaf" - this is one of my favorite things in the world. There is never a more peaceful, beautiful moment than when a breeze gusts through aspen trees and the silvery leaves twinkle like wind chimes. And you're SO right; this color is strongly reminiscent, but unmistakably modern. Brilliant.

    1. What an awesome thing to say, Marisa, thank you! If you've not tried any colors from Polish My Life, I can strongly recommend Shaneka's cremes. She has a magic touch with pastels and whitened colors, the formulas have an exquisitely calibrated feel to them that makes them a joy to apply.

  2. Holy cow, and I just re-spotted the phrase "pale laurel green"- girl, that's EXACTLY how I would have described this myself! Are we on the same brainwave or what??! :D xoxo
