Deborah Lippmann Fake It Til You Make It

Fake Til You Make It was recently released by Deborah Lippmann as part of her Jewel Heist collection for fall 2013. I have a GINORMOUS crush on this particular collection and this is the first polish to fall into my hands. It won't be the last, I can tell you that right now.

Deborah Lippmann's website describes Fake It Til You Make It as a "glimmering gilded gold shimmer." Alliterate much? I know, I should talk. Fuzzy called this polish "the gold of your imagination." Absolutely perfect. Fake It Til You Make It is multitudinous gold, with richness and depth and visual texture that brings to mind hidden treasure in old chests and pots of gold at the end of rainbows.

The look of this polish is very similar to the finishes of Lippmann's mermaid polishes, with a sandy granular shimmering finish. Fake It Til You Make It is full of golden shimmer with tiny red and green microglitters that add to the granular look. The glitters offer scintillation rather than flash, while the overall look is of a gold metallic patinated with sparkling sand.

Application was trouble free unless you have clean up to do, which of course I did. This is another one of those polishes that releases countless tiny gold shimmers across your skin the minute acetone hits it. Even though I'd worn this polish for a day and added topcoat for the photos, I'm sure there are still some free range gold shimmers hanging around my nails. Removal will be interesting.

Coverage is excellent. For most purposes, this is a one coater. I used two for the photos over treatment and basecoat. Fake It Til You Make It dries quickly to a satiny textured finish. I wore it that way for a day and got too small gouges for my trouble. But, as you might expect because of its highly textured nature, this is a very forgiving polish. I treated the gouges to a couple of extra dabs of polish and two layers of topcoat and voilĂ ! Even I can't tell where they were.

Those last three photos were taken in the kitchen under the halogens, which brought out the yellow in the gold as well as its potential for sparkle that weren't getting their full due in the rest of the shots. Fake It Til You Make It, like Mermaid's Dream, isn't near as beautiful in photographs as it is in person. The lumps and bumps that make it look like golden streusel in photos aren't really a big deal in person. You can't feel them and they just kind of meld into the visual texture of the polish, softening the gold and making it gleam rather than being stark and flat the way some metallics look. It's a much more organic look, much more subtle.

I think it's genius! I normally don't like gold for my complexion but I can wear this without feeling self-conscious. I think the tiny red and green microglitters will make this a fabulous polish for holiday occasions where you want something seasonal without it being too obvious.

love,
Aunt Liz

    1. Thanks, Lucy! Fake It Til You Make is SO much better in person, as you know! I wish there was a way to translate what it's like with the camera. When you wear it, do you use topcoat or go au natural? I think it's beautiful both ways....
